LSE/RESSOURCES21
Type de manifestation:
Séminaire
Descriptif:

The aim of this seminar will be to introduce to a general audience the latest developments regarding the use of biochar (solid product of biomass pyrolysis) on mining soils. Biochar may be used in this context as an environmental-friendly amendment in order to store carbon, to help revegetation of mine tailings and degraded areas, and to decrease the risk of dissemination of inorganic contaminants, e.g. metals. Biochar might also be useful to extract specific elements by accumulating plant species and to promote so-called agromining.

With the support of Labex Ressources 21 and Laboratoire Sols et Environnement, this seminar will benefit from the oral presentations of several international experts. Up to now, 3 international speakers have already confirmed their participation:- Dr. Luke Beesley (UK), one of the pioneers on the use of biochar and other organic amendments for the remediation of contaminated soils by metals and PAH- Dr. David Houben (France), known for its expertise on the effect of biochars on metals mobility and its interactions with plants,- Pr. Sean Thomas (Canada), an expert in forest ecology and GHG fluxes which has recently moved towards the use of biochar in mine tailings in Canada.Presentations will be given in English. Stimulating and constructive scientific exchanges with the public is expected. Attendance is free and is opened to anyone willing to learn more about this topic.Further information will be given when the final program is available. In the meanwhile, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us (frederic.rees@univ-lorraine.fr).
