Sustainable Management in the Extractive Industries

SUMEX is a 36-month project funded by the European Commission that started on 1 November 2020. The project aims to establish a sustainability framework for the extractive industry in Europe, with the involvement of stakeholders from civil society, academia, industry and government backgrounds from all across the EU.

The aim of the webinar is to go beyond the typical goals of a clustering workshop - knowledge exchange and networking - to challenge the view that good practices relevant for the extractives industry should be drawn only from the extractives industry itself. Mining and other extractive projects do not occur in a vacuum; they often compete with other land uses and directly affect the existing socio-ecological systems of communities and the economic development of the region in which they are situated. Can lessons be taken from other disciplines such as architecture, or other types of projects, such as social housing? In this webinar, we seek to answer these questions by viewing the extractives industry through several non-extractive lenses. But lessons learned are pointless if they cannot be transferred to others, so raising awareness and educating the community of practitioners is equally important and serves as the topic of the closing session of the webinar.
